Monthly Car Rental Malaysia vs Long-Term Leasing
If you are looking at monthly car rental in Malaysia, you probably need a car for a while and do not want to buy one. The real question is how long "a while" turns out to be, because that decides which contract you should sign.
First, so there is no confusion: Malaysia Car Leasing (MCL) does not do one-month rentals. Our contracts start at six months and run to 36 months. If you need a car for a few weeks or a single month, go to a rental company; below is what to check before you sign with one. If the need will probably last half a year or more, the numbers look quite different.
The short answer
- Need a car for less than 6 months? Rent monthly. You will pay more per month, but you are not locked in.
- Need a car for 6 months or longer? Lease. The monthly rate is lower, maintenance and insurance are bundled, and you get a fixed cost you can budget around.
- Not sure? Look back at the last "temporary" car you hired and how long you actually kept it.
What monthly car rental in Malaysia usually looks like
Monthly rental is mostly offered by rental companies and car-sharing platforms that also do daily and weekly hire. Terms differ between providers, so read the fine print, but you will usually see:
- Short commitment. You can usually take a car for one month and extend month by month.
- A higher monthly rate. The provider has to cover the days the car sits idle between customers, and that goes into the price.
- Insurance included, with an excess. Basic cover is normally part of the rate, but you may carry an excess if something happens, and lower-excess options cost extra.
- A mileage cap. Many monthly plans set a limit and charge per kilometre beyond it.
- A security deposit. Often held on a card or paid up front and returned after the car is checked.
- Whatever unit is available. You choose a category, not always a specific model, and the car may change if you extend.
For a short project, or to cover a car that is in the workshop, that is a perfectly good deal.
What long-term corporate leasing looks like
A corporate lease is a fixed contract for a set period, usually priced as one monthly figure that covers most of the cost of running the car. At MCL, that looks like this:
- Terms of 6, 12, 24 or 36 months. Nothing shorter than six months.
- One monthly rate that includes: comprehensive insurance and road tax, two scheduled services a year, tyres, battery and wear items, a replacement vehicle within 24 hours, nationwide roadside assistance, and delivery to your office or site.
- Paperwork built for companies. Your PO number is carried through to the invoice, and you get one monthly statement of account.
- 4,000 km a month on the standard plan. An unlimited-mileage plan is available at a higher rate.
- A specific car. You pick the model and keep the same unit for the term.
- At the end of the term, you either return the car or renew the schedule and carry on with the same unit. There is no option to buy the car; MCL keeps ownership of its fleet.
MCL runs around 200 of its own vehicles rather than brokering other people's cars, so the car you sign for is the car we maintain.
How the monthly rate drops as the term gets longer
The rates below are MCL's monthly rates for four cars from different segments, taken from our current price list, on the standard 4,000 km plan.
| Vehicle | 6 months | 12 months | 24 months | 36 months | Drop, 6 → 36 months |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Perodua Bezza 1.3 (sedan) | RM1,900 | RM1,750 | RM1,600 | RM1,500 | RM400/month (about 21%) |
| Honda City 1.5 RS (sedan) | RM2,800 | RM2,600 | RM2,500 | RM2,300 | RM500/month (about 18%) |
| Toyota Innova 2.0 (7-seat MPV) | RM3,900 | RM3,750 | RM3,500 | RM3,300 | RM600/month (about 15%) |
| Toyota Hiace window van (van) | RM4,000 | RM3,800 | RM3,650 | RM3,500 | RM500/month (about 13%) |
Going from six months to twelve alone saves RM150 to RM200 a month on these four cars: RM150 on the Bezza and Innova, RM200 on the Honda City and Hiace.
Across a fleet it adds up. Five Honda City units on a 36-month term cost RM2,500 less per month than the same five cars on a six-month term. Over a year, that is RM30,000.
The longer term is not automatically better. If a project might end in eight months, a 36-month contract is the wrong tool, however good the rate looks.

Side-by-side comparison
| Monthly rental (1–3 months) | MCL corporate lease (6–36 months) | |
|---|---|---|
| Minimum commitment | Usually one month | Six months |
| Monthly cost | Higher | Lower, and falls as the term grows |
| Maintenance and wear items | Varies by provider | Included |
| Insurance and road tax | Usually included, check the excess | Comprehensive insurance and road tax included |
| Replacement car | Varies | Within 24 hours |
| Choice of model | Often by category | Specific model, same unit for the term |
| Invoicing | Card or receipt per rental | PO number on invoice, one monthly statement |
| Speed to get a car | Usually faster; depends on the provider | 3–7 working days after documents are checked |
| End of term | Return or extend | Return, or renew with the same unit |
That speed row matters. If your driver starts on Monday and it is already Friday, a lease will not get a car to them in time. A short rental can bridge the gap while a lease is set up.
Decision checklist
Run through these questions before you sign anything.
- How long do you really need the car? Under six months, rent. Six months or more, a lease will usually cost less per month.
- Has a "temporary" need ever turned permanent in your business? If you have been extending a monthly rental for months, you are already paying lease-length time at rental prices.
- Do you need the car this week? Lease delivery takes 3–7 working days after document checks. For an urgent start, rent first.
- Who handles servicing, tyres and breakdowns today? If the answer is "someone in admin, when they remember", an all-in lease takes that work off their desk.
- Does finance need a PO number on every invoice? If so, check whether your rental provider can do it. A corporate lease is set up for it.
- How far does the car travel each month? The standard MCL plan covers 4,000 km a month. If your team drives more, ask about the unlimited plan.
- Do you need a specific model? For client-facing cars or seven-seaters for site crews, a lease lets you choose the exact model.
- Do you want to own the car at the end? If yes, neither monthly rental nor an MCL lease is the right product. You would be looking at hire purchase; see lease to own vs hire purchase vs leasing.
- How will the cost be treated in your accounts? Lease payments for business use are generally treated as an operating expense, but check the details with your accountant.
A practical middle path
Some businesses use both. They rent a car for the first few weeks to cover an urgent start, then move onto a lease once the need is confirmed. Others start with a six-month lease to test a new branch or contract, then renew on a longer term once it is clearly staying.
A six-month term costs more per month than a longer one, but you are only committing for half a year.

FAQ
Does MCL offer one-month car rental?
No. MCL contracts start at six months, with terms of 6, 12, 24 or 36 months. If you only need a car for a month, a car rental company is a better fit.
What is the cheapest long-term car lease at MCL?
The Perodua Bezza 1.3, from RM1,600 a month on a 24-month term, or RM1,500 a month on 36 months. On a six-month term it is RM1,900 a month.
Is monthly car rental cheaper than leasing in Malaysia?
For short periods, rental is often the cheaper total, because you only pay for the months you use. Per month, though, rental is usually more expensive. Once you need a car for six months or more, a lease usually works out cheaper.
What is included in an MCL lease?
Comprehensive insurance and road tax, two scheduled services a year, tyres, battery and wear items, a replacement car within 24 hours, nationwide roadside assistance, delivery to your office or site, your PO number on invoices, and one monthly statement.
Can I buy the car at the end of the lease?
No. MCL leases are not lease-to-own. At the end of the term you return the car or renew and keep driving the same unit.
How much do I pay up front?
A RM100 booking fee online. Your first month and a one-month deposit are invoiced after the car has been inspected and the agreement signed.
